The Battle Against Lou Gehrig's Disease Is Being Waged In the Southbay

For 23 years, Los Gatos High School coach Charlie Wedemeyer has shown us ALS, while it may be a crippling disease, can't take the spirit out of a fighter.

Join members of the Charlie Wedemeyer Family Outreach for the Second Annual 'Charlie Wedemeyer Scholarship Awards Dinner'. Six Santa Clara County high school athletes who have overcome huge obstacles of their own, will be awarded several thousand dollars in scholarship money.

When: Wednesday, May 17, 2000 at 6pm

Where: The Fairmont Hotel, Imperial Ballroom, in downtown San Jose

Who: Joining Charlie and Lucy Wedemeyer will be former 49'ers Brent Jones and Ronnie Lott, ice skating legend Peggy Fleming, and Tony Granato.

Emcee duties will be shared by Vernon Glenn of KRON Channel 4, and local media celeb turned Los Gatos town councilman Jan Hutchins.

Why: To inspire everyone, everywhere not to 'give up the fight'

(Some of the young award recipients can be contacted before the event, for a good 'preview story'. Each is a profile in courage and tenacity.)
