| Volume I - Issue 3, September 2002 Fourth Annual Inspirational Benefit The Hawaiian music and the fragrance of flower leis instantly transported you to the islands and brought a warm, family atmosphere to the already perfect, tropical setting of the Decathlon Club in Santa Clara, CA. Again, the Wedemeyer's gathered friends, family, and guests for a powerful evening to raise money and awareness in the fight against ALS. Tony Granato (former San Jose Sharks, USA Olympic Men's Hockey, and current coach for Colorado Avalanche) and his wife, Linda, served as Honorary Chairs. Their lives were affected by ALS when Linda's college roommate was diagnosed with the disease. The event, attended by 300, had many highlights including the likes of Tony Granato and Coach Steve Mariucci (San Francisco 49ers) showing off their best hula moves! Nine year old Jeryl-Ray Concepcion wowed the room with a stunning accapella version of the Star Spangled Banner. The moving stories of two ALS families -- the Worshams and the Gamms -- were featured again this year. Charlie and Lucy addressed the audience, and made a tribute to hanai son, Craig Williams (son Kale's best friend), who has been an invaluable help to the family for many years. CWFO also gave away scholarships to high school seniors who have overcome adversity. Five student-athletes were honored with the Charlie Wedemeyer Scholarship Award. Their stories brought many to tears. Awards were presented by Craig Morton (former Dallas Cowboy & Denver Bronco), Tony Granato, Coach Steve Mariucci, and Lisa Nanez (San Jose CyberRays). The benefit raised much needed funds for ALS research and local patient services, and scholarships. Special thanks to our wonderful sponsors: Barbara & Mark Beck, Orchard Supply Hardware, and the San Francisco Forty Niner Foundation. The evening was incredible -- hope you can join us next year!
